Welcome to another customiser spotlight, where we shine the light on extraordinary customisers in our ever growing community.
Today’s spotlight is extra special (to me at least) because this time we’ll be shining the spotlight on a guy who has been my right hand man here at MCH for the last couple of years, helping to manage not only the Facebook page but also to deal with the onslaught of questions (and occasional peanuts) that the page attracts. I’m talking of course about Richard Marotta, aka @RichardFormula1 – a guy who has gone from customising obscurity to master craftsman in such a short amount of time it amazes me!
*Just to put it into perspective, 2 years ago Richard was at wheelswap and basic respray stage and only a few months ago he was one of 20 winners to take out the 2017 Matchbox Custom Contest. So yeah – the guy’s got talent!
Let’s learn a little more about this super cool dude* with the super cool talent for customising little tiny diecast cars
*I refer to Richard as a Super Cool Dude based not so much on his actions (which only reaffirm his super coolness) but because every pic of him exudes ‘cool’ (in my aging mind anyway LOL) . I of course took the liberty of adding the above photo without his say-so – haha suffer in ya jocks Rich, that’s what you get for being younger, better looking and super cooler than me. Got anything to say for yourself now mate?
How Long Have You Been Customising Hot Wheels?
Technically since I was a child, but officially what I would consider “proper customs” around 5 years ago. Though when I joined My Custom Hotwheels Facebook Group 2 years ago, things really kicked into overdrive!
What Got You Interested in Hot Wheels?
Being an only child probably had a lot to do with it,my parents started buying me them when I was small child (4 years old) I was also massive into gijoe and lego and still have an extensive collection of both. But hotwheels and mbx were the biggest part of my toy life as a child!
How long before you turned from collector to customiser?
Probably around 6 years ago when I had been Collecting again since I was 21,my collection hit the 15k mark of cars,I started messing with them.
I wasn’t satisfied enough with just buying them and putting them away and occasionally looking at them,I wanted to play with them again like I did as a kid! Lol
Also I became frustrated they (hotwheels matchbox) weren’t making them with the colours/wheels I preferred so set about fixing that!
How Old Are You.. Etc Etc
I’m 35 and married with 1 fur baby,my cat fluffy! Hoping to have a kid soon so my custom legacy can live on! Haha
Where is home- Perth Western Australia born and raised. Love it here! ….sometimes?!
What is Your Favourite Hot Wheels Casting?
Well,I used to have many favourites, but I would say most of all any Ferrari casting. They are my real life favourite car. I rarely ever customise them because I can’t improve perfection! Ha! #forzaferrari
What Sort of Customs Do you Like Doing The Most?
Now days I don’t have a favourite casting to customise in particular. It’s always changing.Something new will come out and I’ll like that a lot and so on. Some people only ever customise the Datsun wagon or Honda civics?!! That drives me nuts! Life’s too short to be pigeon holed to only one type of car?! Plus,I can’t let my creativity roam free without a broad range of different genres to explore. Also,it tends to be more about what cars I don’t like to customise, there are tones that are popular that do nothing much for me. For example there are tones of new camaros and stuff that don’t interest me,I really only buy what I like to chop. Lastly,I’m not much of a fan of re-creating someone’s real life car,i struggle with creative restraints or limitations having to reproduce an exact copy. The biggest reason I love making customs is freedom of expression,I like to compare it to a band doing a cover song-I may take inspiration from real life but always put my unique spin on it. Lol sorry rant over!
Where and how can people see more of your work?
On Instagram as @richardformula1
Or at my actual house … ?!?
I’m joking, nobody’s allowed to come to my house. LOL (GAWD)
Would You Like To Make Mentions or Shout Out – Or Just Add Something in Closing?
I guess I’d like to say to people reading this,is that whether you’re beginning at customs or are far greater skilled than I,remain humble and true to yourself, try to not be easily influenced by trends or what people think your custom works should be,art is in the eye of the beholder. Also never give up or stop making different customs, your only as good as your last custom!!
“Customise insane or remain the same”
— GREAT ADVICE RICHARD – Sorry, as you were (GAWD ALEX STOP INTERRUPTING!)
Lastly I want to shout out to some special people in this hobby who without their help I wouldn’t be where I am today with customs-
Alex Whalley of course!!! Thankyou!
I’m honoured to be a part of mch with such a talented and nice guy. (Aww shucks, thanks brother!)
Troy yikallis, who has an amazing knowledge of diecast cars and great friend and nice guy,who helps me with parts for my customs and donour cars which I just couldn’t get otherwise!
Plus other perthys-you know who you are!
But most of all my beautiful wife who puts up with this dominating a large part of our lives?!
And thankyou for reading everyone!
