It’s been almost 3 years since I first discovered the world of customising small diecast cars and in that time I have thoroughly enjoyed not only the journey but also the people I have been lucky enough to meet and engage with along the way (hi instafam!)
When I first started this website I thought I would share all the customs I created along the way but I quickly realised this was never going to happen, mainly because I was creating too bloody many! #Neverenoughcustoms. There was also an issue relating to the gradual decline of Work-In-Progress shots, a problem I like to refer to as the ‘First Child Syndrome’.
For those of you that like myself have more than one child you will know exactly what I am talking about, for everyone else it simply refers to the basic law of decline that occurs when you have more children. The first child is photographed and every stage of their first few years is documented. The second child, not so much. The third child….wait? we have a third child? Exactly.
My Custom Hot Wheels is Famous (Again)
I was recently featured in Diecast 64 Magazine (Grab your copy here) and one of the many questions they asked during the interview was what my favourite customs were. They then requested I share 10 of my favourites and it was at this point that I realised I had WAAAAAY more than 10 that I would genuinely consider ‘favourite’. Granted I definitely have a top 3 (for reasons I shall explain shortly) but beyond that there are at least a dozen more I wouldn’t dare leave out of a favourites list….so technically that would also make them favourites yes? meh, semantics. Moving on…
I therefore present to you in no particular order (excepting the first 3 LOL) the favouritest customs I have created over the past 3 or so years:
My Best Custom Diecast Creations
The Kombi Kopter
As much as I would love to call this the Kool Kombi Kopter I decided that the acronym for this would be a little too….yeah ummm nope.
Political incorrectness aside, this would have to be my favourite custom I have ever made simply for the fact it’s so nice to look at (can I say that?). Sure I have created far crazier things since but this clean and (relatively) simple creation just came together perfectly and looked even better than I had first pictured it in my mind. Of course, in the interest of keeping this post from turning into a blatant promotion of yours truly I th….what? Too late? Meh, who asked you anyway. :p
Like I was saying before I was rudely interrupted by myself… wait! what? … I was going to say that I will endeavour to share some of the build pics and methods behind my madness. (warning: Enter at your own risk)
So the Kombi Kopter started out looking something like this…
And then like a surgeon (yeah Dr Nick maybe) I made my first incision…

HELLO EVERYBODY!

Kool Kombi Trike – The Logo Custom
This is one of those times where the story is more interesting than the custom – and if you haven’t read it yet then I recommend you visit THIS LINK to read the article and get the the story in its entirety. Of course you’ll also get the really (really) short hand version here so FINE THEN!…keep reading you non link clicking sonnova…
I created this Kool little custom for a competition and after the winners were announced I shared it publicly on Facebook and went to bed not realising that what I would wake to was a completely different outlook on this seemingly normal custom creation.
The next day I found a sketched image of my custom done by one very talented gentleman by the name of @Dazzlarock who had taken a liking to my creation. What followed was a quick exchange of compliments and man-love and then #nekminnit this most badass of sketches became the logo you see everywhere that MyCustomHotwheels exists. 🙂 – told you it was a Kool story 🙂
Volkswagen Tanker Back
Don’t be a s.q.u.a.r.e. (back) man!
Rounding out my favourite 3 customs is… another Volkswagen! What the?! interesting considering I ‘apparently’ love JDM first and foremost.
This (dare I say) epic creation was my entry into the first ever official Hot Wheels Custom Contest and I am most proud to say that it won one of the coveted Top 5 spots as picked by the Hot Wheels design team (yay, go me!…no? too soon?) There’s not too much to say about this build without going into minute detail – but then if you want to get all the juicy build gossip then just head over to the original post –> here 🙂
In the meantime here’s some build progress pics and of course the Volkswagen Tanker-back in all her completed glory 😀
Well that rounds out my top 3 customs of all time…for now 😀 #neverstopcustomising
Now if you’re not bored shitless of my shameless self promotion then please enjoy the rest of my favourite 1:64 scale custom creations – in whatever order I remember them in basically 😀
More Favourite Customs by Yours Truly
The Ferrari 288 GTOw
The Rad-io Rod
The Dub Stepper
In case you’re wondering, yes I enjoy coming up with names for these creations almost as much as creating them in the first place. In fact sometimes I have created a custom AFTER coming up with what I sadly think is a clever or punny name 😀
Purple Porsche 911 Cabriolet
I turned what was previously a 934RSR into a 911 Cab – using the interior from a Welly’s 356B of all things.
WWII Inspired Porsche 993 GT2
This was a Christmas present I made for my father. I’m especially impressed with how well these custom made wheels turned out 😉
Surf Swag’n
My Minions
How can you not love them!? Witness the birth of these awesomely cute customs here
R2DF1
Turns out I haven’t even shared this build on the website at all! – Can anyone say “exclusive” LOL
Krispy Kreme Goodness
These customs were a commissioned piece for Krispy Kreme Australia to help them promote a range of summer donuts they had/were releasing. Payment was made partly in Glazed Krispy Kreme goodness…..mmmmmm. You can read the full story and see more details of the build by visiting the original Krispy Kreme article here.
Nutella Customs – My Little Sister’s Wedding Present
You totally better be ‘awwwwwing’ right now!… Read the full heart warming story of this nutty build here
Volkswagen WORK Caddy
One of my earliest builds and the very first time I attempted to cut out a bonnet and put an engine inside. The jury is still out on whether I was successful lol.
Custom Moon Eyes Chrysler Airflow
I think the first image/meme says everything that needs to be said about this Moon Eyes Themed Custom Creation
Speaking of piggies….
C3Pig-O
My first ever attempt at using putty. Turned out I was using the wrong type (at least that’s the excuse I’m sticking with)…meh, you live and you learn …and you improve 😀
And in case you are wondering, the name comes from the fact that this is a pigs head stuck onto the C3PO drag bus that was released in the initial star wars themed Hot Wheels cars.
See more pictures of the build as well as the inspiration behind this odd creation HERE
Lightning McQueen & Volks McWagen
Again it appears that one of my favourite customs has failed to make it to the pages of MCH! Oooooh another exclusive look at one (two) of my relatively recent builds.
The….’That’ll do for now Jimmy, That’ll do’
I actually have another 10 I could list quite easily and as such think it is time to give you a rest (sorry about that bombardment)
Besides, I now have an excuse to publish a part 2 😀
These are fantastic! Love the LMQ VW hauler!
Question… How do I submit some of my customs to you without a Facebook or Instagram account?
Just email me at alex@mycustomhotwheels.com and I will get back to you with my thoughts and whether they’ll be featured or not (y)
I just bit the bullet and created an Instagram account. https://www.instagram.com/pnwdiecastcustoms/
Just getting started, so not much there yet, but let me know what you think!
Hey! Dude a lot of these cars are siiiick! And I’m wondering how much it would be if you could make me a custom Nissan GTR Skyline (R32) ?
I love Hot Wheels cars and JDM, so this is really awesome!!
